PiSym

  • Project title: PiSym - Basics of Nitrogen Fixation Performance Selection in Pea Breeding
  • Project acronym: PiSym
  • Applicants: Baumann, Monika (Getreidezüchtung Peter Kunz); Kamp Miriam (legume breeder)
  • Partner: Swiss Plant Breeding Center (SPBC), Forschungsinstitut für biologischen Landbau (FiBL)
  • Duration: 1.10.2023 – 31.1.2026

Summary

The nitrogen fixation capacity of legumes contributes to soil fertility and the reduction of synthetic fertilizers. In order to breed specifically for nitrogen fixation capacity, methods for differentiating genotypes in this respect are necessary. The influence of different rhizobia on nitrogen fixation capacity must be considered. In PiSym, the influence of rhizobia on nitrogen fixation capacity is measured and a standard method for their molecular and genetic characterization is developed to phenotype nitrogen fixation capacity.
