The association responsible for the Swiss Plant Breeding Center was founded

In Switzerland, there is a high demand for new, stable-yielding and robust plant varieties for sustainable agriculture, particularly due to current challenges such as climate change and emerging plant diseases. In order to strengthen plant breeding and its innovative power in Switzerland, the organisations FiBL, Agroscope, ETH Zurich, Sativa Rheinau AG and Delley Seeds and Plants Ltd have initiated the Swiss Plant Breeding Center (SPBC) with the support of the Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG).

On 11 October, the association "Trägerverein Swiss Plant Breeding Center" was founded at FiBL in Frick to enable the broad-based operation of the SPBC. The organisation's active membership comprises Swiss breeders and breeding researchers, as well as supporting members of the downstream value chain, including those involved in seed production, processing and trade. At the inaugural meeting, the majority of stakeholders engaged in plant breeding in Switzerland were welcomed, and the association was launched on a broad basis. The newly elected board is made up of representatives from private plant breeding, public breeding and breeding research: Dr Monika Messmer from FiBL (President), Prof Bruno Studer from ETH Zurich, Karl-Heinz Camp from Delley Seeds and Plants Ltd, Amadeus Zschunke from Sativa Rheinau AG and Dr Roland Peter from Agroscope.

Dr Monika Messmer, president of the association, explains: "Thanks to the SPBC, the efficiency of public and private Swiss plant breeding is improved and new techniques and innovations can be introduced more quickly into plant breeding programmes".

The SPBC supports private and public Swiss breeding programmes in the introduction of new techniques and innovations from breeding research, thereby increasing the efficiency of Swiss plant breeding.
